Sweet Treats from Home...South Africa!
Imagine my surprise when I arrived to in the office this morning to find a lucky packet of fabulous South African sweets and treats!
They remind me of a wonderful, carefree childhood full of friends, family and sunshine. I think I took it for granted that the beach, mountain and sun would always be there.
Strawberry Fizzer's - which I used to roll up into 'snails' as a kid.
Nik Naks - obligatory chips (crisps) at a braai (bbq).
Jelly Tots - I would squish three of them together to make a 'hamburger'. Nothing quite like them!
Chomp - I have tried for nearly 8 years to find something even remotely smiliar to those in the UK. Trust me...nothing compares! If you read the description, it sounds like a Picnic bar but it is nothing like it.
Beacon Fav'rites - this packet consists of Inside Story, Now, Peppermint Crisp, TV Bar, Peanut Butter Bar, Nougat.. It is heaven in a bag, ek se!!!! Mos lekker, ja!!
I grew up in Cape Town. It is a beautiful place full of amazing, friendly and unique people. And yes, I do miss it and my family and friends, every day. Especially my nearly 7 month old nephew who I have never met. Would I move back? Yes and no. I love where we live in the UK and have wonderful friends here, the majority of which are South African (surprise, surprise!). I guess you gravitate towards what you know? Also, travelling from the UK is far easier and cheaper. 11 hours on a plane to get to or from London is a bit exhausting on the best of days.
Anyway, I can't wait to let Isabella try her first ever chomp! I'm not sure if she is going to see the rest of the treats because she might take them all. I know that parents are meant to share with their children, but this time, I think I am going to make it all about myself and my husband! Thanks Claire :)
